Tackle Dreaded Kitchen Tasks with a Timer

Do you have a particular kitchen task that you put off doing because it seems daunting or just unfun?  (Made up words are welcome here.)  Maybe it’s cleaning out the fridge or scrubbing the casserole dish or (gasp!) meal planning.  Whatever it is, I’m willing to bet that once you finally break down and do it, you think “well, that wasn’t so bad.”

Today let’s consider unloading the dishwasher or putting away clean hand-washed dishes.  These ready-to-be-relocated dishes are standing in the way of taking care of a new set of dirty dishes which could very well be cluttering up your kitchen space. What a vicious cycle.

timer istock photoMy challenge to you: set a timer and tackle the dishes.  You’ll probably be surprised at how little time it actually takes.  I unloaded my last full load in 86 seconds.  If you’re the competitive type, try beating my time or challenge yourself to better your time with each load.  (And no cheating by running a small load just to get a great time.)

If you’re looking to streamline the process, try my efficient process of loading the dishwasher.

How long does it take you to put dishes away?  What other tasks could you try this timer reality check with?
